The Projects…

Rick keeps threatening to do some blogging but as long as he is making guitars, I’m not gonna whine too much.  Thought I’d post a few pictures I took a while back.  There are always surprises to be had when I visit Shaw Guitars, and on this particular day I saw a guitar body wrapped up and stacked on a shelf with a bunch of other wood. Of course, this piqued my interest so I dug it out of the stack of stuff in his shop.

I have no idea what kind of wood this is, Rick told me at the time but now I’ve forgotten. Maybe he’ll make an appearance and straighten things out. Back to my story…after I pulled this body out, I realize that it is sitting on a pile of other guitar bodies, all wrapped carefully in packing foam.  Well, now I have to see them all.

No clue on this one either.  I do recall that quite a few of these are 3/4 size bodies, perfect for a junior size guitar or a bass similar to the Ironwood bass, with a small, dense body that offsets the neck quite well.

If I’m not mistaken, this is some Zebra wood, although it’s quite possible I have no idea what I’m talking about.  This one is very pretty too:

Too bad these tiny pics don’t do them much justice…

Some awesome figure on that one for sure!

Rick…get on here and fill in the blanks for us!

This single cutaway is full sized and carved from a slab of Mahogany if I recall.  Quite heavy and resonant!

Very cool looking wood on both of these…

So many guitar projects, so little time!  And those are just the ones in a single stack sitting on one shelf!

Bass Project

Here’s a Bass project that is in the works, well, actually it’s been on the shelf for some time but it’s so pretty that I’ve been pushing Rick to pick it up again and finish it.  It’s a neck-thru design:  a 5-string fretless bass.  Here’s a closeup of the body:

I’ll have to get with Rick for the details on the woods he used but I think the neck is Maple and Rosewood. Here’s another shot of the entire guitar:

I just love the look of this but I am ever so slightly biased toward neck-thru instruments, just ask Rick. I asked Rick if he played fretless and he said that he didn’t and that maybe that’s why he hasn’t been motivated to finish it out.  A final parting shot of this beauty:
